Updating the passport and survey of the Zlín cemetery

The main motivation of the client for implementing the contract

The statutory city of Zlín, through Pohřebnictví Zlín, spol. s r.o., manages a large number of cemeteries. The digitization and passporting of the cemetery improve the accuracy and clarity of information regarding the extent and condition of the property. A register of grave sites, supplemented with current photographs and precise localization, will enable more efficient cemetery management.
Additionally, the client will obtain essential data for necessary repairs, renovations, and further maintenance of the cemeteries. The cemetery passport will significantly aid in managing the extensive agenda associated with cemetery administration. The provided data can also serve as a foundation for the implementation of a cemetery management system.

Project implementation

The project was divided into several key phases:

  1. Aerial and ground laser scanning of cemeteries
  2. Mapping individual grave sites and cemetery furniture with third-class accuracy
  3. Photographing all grave sites
  4. Clarifying ambiguities in cooperation with the client (e.g., removal or merging of grave sites)
  5. Digitization of the cemetery passport and creation of outputs

Handover and verification on the client’s side

During the processing of the cemetery passport, it was found that for larger grave sites, documenting these sites with only one photograph was insufficient. In some cases, tombstones were unreadable, and the initial database was outdated. Hundreds of new graves, mostly urn graves, were entirely missing from the database. These ambiguities needed to be resolved before the project could be completed.
After processing, the cemetery passport was handed over to the client in digital form, including a database of grave sites, maps of individual cemeteries, photographs of grave sites, an orthophoto mosaic, and digital data documenting cemetery furniture, cemetery boundaries, greenery, pathways, walls and other elements.

For better clarity and more efficient cemetery management, the client was recommended the GIS OCTOPUS Cemetery management system, which enables comprehensive electronic cemetery administration, including grave site records, lease management and more.
